I found it compelling to start with but once I put it down and picked it up again I found it dull, unsympathetic and unengaging. A Monty Python sketch had the same premise, of course, a fact Kane not only acknowledges, but cleverly weaves into the fabric of his own fiction, alongside the Stoic Greek philosopher Chrysippus of Soli.

Plot-wise, not a whole lot happens, but we get a detailed portrait of our character, and the psyche of a man gifted with a deep understanding of humour, but cursed with an inability to laugh.
Yet Benjamin is cursed, too: Cousin – yes, their weird love-affair was pretty well fleshed-out, but we didn’t really see any reasons why she felt so close to the protagonist. Devotees of the art of stand-up will no doubt welcome Kane’s satirical take on its processes, even if he is occasionally heavy-handed when making his points.
I did stick it out to the end, but honestly just felt it got worse and worse. Russell Kane’s on-stage flourishes may suit his live act but they do not translate well onto the page. Surprised at the low reviews on here! I love Russell Kane as a stand up, but found this book to be hugely pretentious, like he wanted us to know that he knows big words and philosophy.

I’m not trying to take this book very literally, as it’s obviously meant as a farcical romp, but I think some of the interactions would’ve been more humorous if they were presented in a more-realistic way is all. I don’t think that I’m the right sort of audience for this book. Thanks for telling us about the problem. Visit our channel on YouTube. Worth a read but you probably need to be his humorkst to understand his writing style as he writes as he speaks.
Kane is not a very good writer and I was bored of Benjamin White by about page Want to Read Currently Reading Read. I found myself re-reading paragraphs just so I could understand what was going on.

Strangely, though, the jokes aren’t funny — not even snippets we hear of the routine so potent it makes listeners bleed from the eyes and die.

Making him a paedophile would probably be a step too far, so Kane contents himself with throwing the rest of the book of unpleasant traits at him. But it wasn’t enough to make up for the rest of the book.
